I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there’s been a subtle change in the types of rugs we’re seeing in designer homes. For a long time, vintage inspired rugs with faded motifs dominated the design world, but lately we’ve been seeing more and more geometric patterned rugs taking their place. Some geometric patterns are so subtle that they are mistaken for solid.

I welcome this change. I still love vintage rugs and they aren’t going anywhere just yet, but I equally love seeing variety in them. It finally feels like we’ve taken a step outside the expected. Perhaps that’s because designers are playing with organic patterns in custom upholstered furniture, resulting in the need for a more subtle, geometric base.

I myself am drawn to smaller, more subtle geometric patterns. They feel less busy and burdensome to my brain and play a supporting role in the design of a room. But I have a deep appreciation for bold geometric rugs with classic patterns – plaid or diamond, for example. They play a key role in the design of a room while supporting the décor. Both have their place in design and both are beautiful.

Wayfair’s selection of geometric pattern rugs is huge and features some of my favorite brands.
