What's up, geeks + gamers? It's Odin!

new faces Reagan, Fear, 1992 fail to impress

While some in the mainstream media are running with the notion that the summer box office total is going to be much higher than last year's disappointing box office total, they can't change the fact that this Labor Day weekend is seeing the worst box office numbers of the entire summer. Even with multiple new releases spread across various target demographics, it's clear that this is one of the worst weekends we've seen at the box office this summer.

starting with ReaganWhich had a reported budget of around $25 million, it remained stuck in the single digits and only managed to earn $7,400,720 in its first weekend of release. As of now, the film is losing approximately -$33,429,604 considering its budget and estimated marketing costs. While it's a bit early to tell how much money this film is likely to lose, these numbers help to show that the older movie-going demographic still hasn't returned to theaters in any meaningful way. Even though this film seems to evoke nostalgia for those who grew up in the '80s or were fans of Ronald Reagan as president, it's clear that this alone isn't enough to be a box office success in today's market.

Now let's move on to the AI-inspired horror movie FearWith a budget of only $12 million, we see another demonstration of how Hollywood has clearly still not recovered in terms of box office performance. I believe the studio must have thought that a low budget horror/thriller featuring AI would be enough to entice the typically powerful horror fan audience and help them make a quick buck, but it turns out that it takes a lot more than that to get any moviegoers back to the theater these days. Based on its budget and costs, the film is currently losing only -$15,045,000, but given the very little conversation around the film and these incredibly low opening numbers, there is little chance for it to make back its money in theaters. Ultimately, the fate of this film will be decided when it finally releases to VOD and streaming

Finally, we get to what I believe is Ray Liotta’s last posthumous film. 1992. Not only does this movie have a title that makes researching the budget time-consuming and downright annoying, but it also received a weirdly limited release from Lionsgate on less than 1,000 screens, which ultimately led to the movie's opening domestic number being $1,365,000… oh. Not only 1992 The budget of this film has not yet been disclosed as of this writing, but the likelihood of this film being mentioned in future articles on this site is highly questionable, as it is grossing much less than all the other released films… including some that have been out for more than six weeks. My guess is that the budget of this film is probably between $20-$60 million, which means that if it cost around $40 million to make, it would be in the red at this point by about -$59,249,250. While the other films I mentioned have a chance of making money at some point (even if it’s only a small chance), I can’t say that this film will…. 1992which seems bound for the Dollar Tree or Dollar General movie selection bin.

According to the-numbers.com, This weekend's top 5 At the household level there were:

  1. deadpool and wolverine (Drop of 17% in the sixth weekend)
  2. Alien: Romulus (Drop of 43% in the third weekend)
  3. it ends with us (Drop of 36% in the fourth weekend)
  4. Reagan ($7.4 million as a new release)
  5. Twisters (+17% in 7th weekend)

deadpool and wolverine, Alien: RomulusAnd it ends with us maintain one's dominance

That shouldn’t surprise anyone, considering how poorly all of the new releases performed this weekend. deadpool and wolverine, Alien: RomulusAnd it ends with us Once again in the top three spots. With the sequel to the classic film Beetle Juice The next weekend these films release will probably be the last weekend these films will release in these places. It is likely that deadpool and wolverine Some will continue to perform in second place for a while, and others will fight for third place, possibly until don't speak ill It will be released on September 13… but, anything can happen. As an update, deadpool and wolverine has reached $1,257,925,117 and is on pace to reach at least $1.3 billion before the race ends; Alien: Romulus has earned $283,464,631 globally, but because over $75 million of that came from China, it still hasn't made its money back, though it's set to do so very soon, currently it's lost approximately -$4,296,156; it ends with us has made $283,719,000 worldwide and is close to $100 million in net profit, which is pretty impressive for a movie that probably no one had on their bingo card to be a box office hit in the summer of 2024.
