Destin Daniel Cretton is in talks to direct Spider-Man 4
Marvel has once again made the most boring creative choice, or at least one of them. Despite minor setbacks like differences between Marvel and Sony, director Jon Watts moving on, and star Tom Holland pretending he can't return, spider man 4 That's almost confirmed, with reports suggesting production was set to begin in the fall of 2024. (That's no longer happening; more on that later.) A few directors have been mentioned as potential replacements for Watts, the most interesting being Drew Goddard ,the cabin in the Woods, The Martians, Bad Times at the El Royale), this rumor came via Daniel RPK. Several months later, Dan Schneider confirmed Goddard made it onto the Spidey director's shortlist, and Justin Lin said (Star Trek BeyondSome? fast and furious movies) was also on Marvel's radar. However, today, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringswould be the one to bring Spider-Man back to the big screen.
Talk about bursting a balloon. How can you toss out names like Drew Goddard and Justin Lin and stop at Destin Daniel Cretton? He's not even what I'd call a safe choice; he seems like an understudy. And I suspect he is just that. Marvel has undeniably been on a downward slide ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home. (You could say Avengers: EndgameBut that leaves out the two subsequent Spidey movies; we could say Black Widow (A mulligan.) Making an MCU movie may no longer be the career boon it once was, and if it is, talent is probably less inclined to sign on and tolerate Marvel's notoriously controlling attitude. So, Marvel did what it's been doing for the last few years and signed someone who made one of their recent bad movies or shows like they did The Fantastic Four: The First Step,
I think Marvel's enthusiasm for making this movie may have been a factor in their decision. THR Piece, Marvel wants to get spider man 4 is moving as fast as possible, early 2025 is the new target. This makes me think they had a hard time finding a director; the two big names they mentioned didn't work out, so production had to be delayed. And since modern Hollywood cares more about release dates than the quality of their movies, Marvel chose the guy who left Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (which is now Avengers: Doomsday) to “focus on his other Marvel projects.” Speaking of which, it's also likely that they need to move Cretton around; if Shang-Chi 2 That's not happening, it could be that they just gave the Cretans a blank Spider-Man slots and killed two birds with one stone. Yes, it's a dull option that won't excite anyone, but at least they can make a checkmark on their calendar and high-five it. There's also the problem of money; deadpool and wolverine broke a bad streak for Marvel, and it's likely a blow that won't be repeated at least until Fantastic Four. Marvel Breaking the bank for the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr. Cretton's biggest appeal is probably his modest salary. As for his reputation, or lack thereof, I wouldn't be surprised if they think no one cares about the director because Spidey will draw the crowds no matter what; maybe they're right. And who knows? Cretton could do far better Spider-Man than the movie he did Shang-ChiBut it's a shame they're settling for Cretan when they had their eyes set on something else.
