Indiana Jones and the Great Circle De-emphasizes GunsIndiana Jones and the Great Circle De-emphasizes Guns

Indiana Jones will be able to use guns in his upcoming video game, but he'd be better off keeping them to himself. A recent interview EdgeA UK video games magazine with an online presence at GamesRadar (similar to GamesRadar) Total Film), Axel Torvenius, Creative Director Indiana Jones and the Great CircleThe upcoming video game that proves we've given up on thinking of good names for Indiana Jones stories talked a little about the gameplay. Specifically, Torvenius gave some details about how the game involves guns, and his comments quickly spread, with indie fans not too happy with how he and the game's other developers view the world's premier adventure hero.

“We don't promote gunplay. It's not being promoted as the primary way to get ahead. The primary way to get ahead is always to try to use your wit and whip… Indy doesn't have any superpowers. A lot of the time, you can see that it's not easy for him to get involved in a fight. At the end of the day, he's a teacher and a somewhat clumsy archaeologist. He just has this obsession that constantly puts him in these weird situations with enemies and traps… It wouldn't be true to the character for him to constantly be firing on camps for all the enemies, and the team at MachineGames wanted to emphasize the level of danger. We're trying to capture that feeling, that if you need to get involved in combat, it's very dangerous to get shot at. It's also very dangerous to shoot at enemies, because they'll have an alarm system and reinforcements coming.”

I admit that when I first saw the headlines and the X posts that shared excerpts of these comments, my eyes rolled. It seemed like modern leftist nonsense trying to make some half-baked political statement about guns using a character who has used them in all of his movies (I think; I don't remember much of what happened Dial of fatePartly because I worked really hard). Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is one of the most famous scenes raiders of the lost arkWhen Indy is confronted by a sword-wielding enemy who is about to cut down our hero, he then pulls out his revolver and shoots the man, and quickly moves on to save Marion. There are many other examples of this, such as shooting down Nazis in an Austrian castle Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Or that great moment when he fires a bullet in the same movie that kills an entire line of Nazis.

But taking the whole quote in context, I think Torvenius is making a fair point. It's not that Indiana Jones wouldn't use a gun; it's that Indiana Jones wouldn't use a gun if it wasn't to his advantage to do so. The scenarios he describes are ones where stealth is a must, and firing a gun would alert the entire Nazi camp to Indy's presence. And this is something he does in the movies. For example, when Indy fires a machine gun at the castle The Last CrusadeThe Nazis already know he's there; when he's sneaking around looking for his father, he punches his enemies rather than shooting them. raiders of the lost arkHe's trying to escape the Nazis on a boat secured for him by Sallah and later on a submarine dock, so he avoids violence altogether in the former and punches the latter to create a disguise. Torvenius is right that Indy doesn't have superpowers; Indy is always weak, always physically at a disadvantage, always narrowly escaping death.

This weakness is what makes Indiana Jones a great character and sets him apart from the heroes Torvenius is probably talking about. I don't think he means Superman or Spider-Man when he says “superpowers”; I think he means John Rambo or virtually any guy played by Arnold Schwarzenegger who will cut down armies of bad guys with guns, whether playing stealth or not. I like those guys, but I agree; Indiana Jones is not like that. Amusingly, Torvenius says you can play that way if you want; it would be a lot more difficult because you'd face a lot more enemies shooting at you. That option is there if you really want to play that way Indiana Jones and the Great Circle It's an 80s action movie (as opposed to an 80s adventure movie; we all know the difference), but they want gamers to focus on thinking their way out of danger. And I believe that's the right way to go with Indiana Jones. Having said that, keep a pistol ready, just like Indy used to do.
