James Spader Will Return as Ultron in the Vision SeriesJames Spader Will Return as Ultron in the Vision Series

AI never dies. The Hollywood Reporter In particular, I learned James Spader will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ultron, the villainous artificial intelligence that last threatened Earth's Mightiest Heroes in 1984. Avengers: Age of UltronSpader's Ultron will return Vision series being developed for Disney+ by showrunner Terry Matalas, who is responsible for Season 3 Star Trek: PicardOne Star Trek Fans loved this character. Paul Bettany will once again play the role of Vision. THR It is also said that the Vision show is not officially titled Vision QuestAs it was first considered, and intended to be “the third part of a trilogy”, WandaVision And Agatha All Along The first two are. The show is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2026, so Matalas has some time to get it together, which is a good thing.

with the caveat that Nothing From Miracle It is possible Reliance Happen Good Now, I'm glad to hear that. I know most people don't like it age of UltronBut I pretty much do. There are some problems with it, and it's not top five or anything, but there are a lot of good things in that movie, not the least of which is Vision and his moral conflict with Ultron. Ultron himself is one of the problems with the movie – some aspects of him, anyway – and I think bringing him back would be a good way to rectify some of them. The biggest problem with Ultron is that the movie never took advantage of him being an artificial intelligence. His evil plan to destroy all life on Earth with a floating meteor is something any supervillain could do, while things that would have been specifically Ultron-related would have only been made up. Why not show him trying to launch every nuclear missile in the world, rather than just imagine he could do it? Or have him infiltrate governments' computer systems and take them down. how it should have ended made a video where Ultron crashes every quinjet the Avengers try to stop him on, which was meant to be a joke but would have been awesome in the movie. Instead, it's rising cities and magical scepters and Infinity Gems.

But bringing him back and having Vision face off in a low-key TV show could be exactly what Ultron needs. Now you have two beings created with AI in personal combat (presumably) rather than a big Avengers movie that needs a big fight. This is where Ultron's strengths in the movie could work in his favor, especially his philosophical musings, which were fascinating. Unfortunately, Ultron wasn't a huge threat physically, but he did start some nice discussions about morality, religion, and man's place in the world. And now, Vision is essentially reborn and trying to find his way, trying to figure out who he is; having Ultron have an influence could be fun, especially if he's the devil on his shoulder trying to convince Vision to give up his old superhero ways and use his power for himself. THR he wonders how he'll come back because age of Ultron It ended with Vision killing the last of Ultron's drones, which was going to destroy him forever. But that shouldn't be too hard to avoid; maybe Ultron put himself on a hard drive somewhere as a backup in case all his bodies get destroyed, or something. Or, since Vision is on a quest for self-discovery, maybe he resurrects his creator so he can learn more about himself, giving Ultron the chance to make Vision into what he originally wanted him to be before the Avengers get their hands on him. This series has a lot of potential, and Ultron only adds to it.

Part of the reason is that he's played by a brilliant actor like James Spader. He gives Ultron more personality than I could have imagined, bringing out the humanity in a robot that's determined to destroy it all. Joss Whedon, writer-director age of Ultrondescribed him as an angry teenager, and I see a lot of that in Spader's performance. He's angry at his “father” Tony Stark, and questions everything around him, coming to the conclusion that it's evil, while causing human extinction as the solution. It's very much like a high school kid who watched a Michael Moore documentary and thinks he has all the answers. But Ultron is a little smarter than that, and he at least asks good questions about the world, even if he comes up with the wrong answers, which is what made his final scene with Vision so fascinating. They agree that the human race is doomed, but one wants to save it by any means possible, or at least try, while the other wants to accelerate its removal from Earth. I'd love to see Spader play a somewhat grown-up version of him, a little wiser and perhaps more restrained, but no less angry or malicious. And James Spader is a fantastic actor in general, Sex, Lies, and Videotape To Boston Legal To Blacklist (Which I still have to finish.) Watch this scene and tell me he can't bring it:
