Review: The Wild Robot (2024)

when i saw it for the first time Trailer for wild robotI was sure the movie would make me cry. DreamWorks has been stepping up the quality and versatility of its animation lately, and more importantly, it's the kind of storytelling that always hits home. “I don’t have the programming to be a mother,” Rose, the robot (Lupita Nyong’o) said, “sold me.” The trailer gave me too wall-e And iron giant Vibes, robots along with wildlife and lush greenery. If that wasn't enough, wild robot Features an all-star cast directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo and Stitch, how to Train Your DragonCan a movie live up to such high expectations and an already touching, gorgeous trailer? Let's find out.

wild robot It takes place on a secluded island where all the wildlife exists in a strict hierarchy, simply trying to survive and eat before they are eaten. However, things start to change when an assistant robot (N'Yongo) crash lands there. At first everyone is afraid of Rose and runs away as soon as they see her. Whenever she is weak they rob her and treat her like a freak. When Rose can't find any tasks to complete, she considers returning to her factory, but is given the unexpected assignment of raising an orphaned Runt Gosling (Boone Storm). She is befriended by a fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal), who overcomes his predatory nature to help raise the child. Rose constantly overrides her programming to take best care of Brightbill (voiced by Kit Connor as an adult) until it is time for the geese to migrate. Brightbill makes contact with people of his own kind, who cruelly reject him and mock his unusual upbringing. However, the geese's leader Longneck (Bill Nighy) encourages Rose not to abandon Brightbill's advances. Can Brightbill prepare in time for migration for the winter, what will happen to the animals on the island, and might Rose become more than she was meant to be?

You can already pick up on many of the cliché themes from movies like this: becoming a parent, overcoming your “programming” to achieve something greater, finding family where you really “belong”, Etcetera. Much of this can be seen in Sanders. excluding other work the CroodsWhich I will ignore because I don't like it. Stitch also literally crash-lands on Earth in an unfamiliar and unexpected new home, and Rose's fear of animals can clearly be compared to Hiccup and Toothless' relationship. how to Train Your DragonHowever, I don't consider these parallels to be unsuccessful, just something that came to mind. Rose feels unique as a character, and I really enjoyed her bond with Brightbill as well as Fink. Fink is an entertaining character, and I enjoyed his progression the most. I wish they got more credit for co-parenting Brightbill in the movie; Without Fink, Rose would have inadvertently killed Gosling at times out of ignorance. Fink is an essential member of the “family” and I guess that hasn't changed anything in the end.

The cast in this is an absolute highlight wild robotLupita Nyong'o gives an unrecognizable vocal performance as Rose. I like how her voice becomes different as she becomes more emotional and connects with her new friends. She seems extremely robotic in the beginning, but by the end her tone becomes almost human. Pedro Pascal is understated as Fink, but I like the tough exterior and we learn more about him as the film progresses. I love Bill Nighy and will never complain about it He is doing voice-over workMark Hamill plays a bear named Thorn who admires Rose and stands up to his community of animals. I thought Paddler Beaver looked familiar, but he's actually voiced by Matt Berry (what do we do in the shadowsI've never seen/heard him in anything before, but here he does well. Stephanie Hsu (everything everywhere at once) is the voice of Vontra, another robot who appears later. She's pretty funny and quirky, but I wish they gave her more to do. He's an amazingly funny and versatile performer, perfect for this type of work.

draw for second wild robot Beautiful animation. This was evident in the film's marketing, which featured some of the most memorable shots, but not all. DreamWorks boosts its creative and technical strengths the bad guys, Puss in Boots: The Last Wishand now wild robotWhich is another step in the best possible direction. I wish Disney was as adventurous and creative as studios like DreamWorks and Sony Animation. I've been amazed by this modern revolution in mainstream American animation since the first time I saw it spider verseAnd I hope we continue to be surprised.

I don't want it to feel like this wild robot The best film ever made. That's the only thing in marketing that gives me pause: the level of praise from critics. I remember quotes about it being the best DreamWorks film and one of the best films of that era. This is high praise. Anyway, my only concern is with the humor of the film and the pace of the first half. Once Rose meets Brightbill for the first time, I think we need more time to see her develop. It's very sweet, and I think it'll pay off even more near the end. Comedy is no big deal; It can be a bit childish and obvious at times. I guess I've finally come of age because the kids in my theater laughed often and loudly. I think a mix of this type of humor and something more sophisticated would have been appreciated.

Overall, I enjoyed wild robotI'm not sure it's as spectacular as I expected, but it's certainly pretty cool. I almost cried twice, the animation has to be seen to be believed, and the cast shines for both recognisability and sheer talent. The comedy and pacing are somewhat lacking, but they don't detract from the character arcs and pure emotions on display. I doubt parents and their kids will get much from Rose's Mission, but I would recommend this film to anyone. We all have parents, and I think anyone can find meaning here.
